Consultant and Project Manager

“Kari is super helpful, asks great questions, and is quick getting up to speed. She does a great job keeping things on track and reminding us why decisions were made!” said one client partner. We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.

Kari Bassett — experienced consultant, project manager, and chaos-whisperer — has a gift for organizing large volumes of information, adapting to ever-changing work environments, and removing roadblocks to meet deadlines.

Collaborating with confidence

When she was a lead project manager for a large financial client, Kari worked with multiple departments to bring over 300 pieces of collateral into compliance with the most current FDIC guidelines. She implemented processes to improve document tracking, simplify future maintenance, and align her team with company document standards. She also delivered weekly status reports detailing risks, action items, decisions, and dependencies. “When it's appropriate and welcome, I like to be hands-on in helping the team,” she said.

Regulatory workers typically have other responsibilities and competing priorities. They have no control over the deadline, and the scope often changes. These variables can put a project at risk. “Regulatory projects are tough and can be incredibly stressful,” said Kari. She proactively works through these sticky situations by assembling stakeholders, gathering information, and facilitating solutions that work for everyone.

“For example, a developer working on production support didn’t have time for an important regulatory project deliverable,” she said. “After I brought everyone together, the team agreed that the developer would work on the regulatory item first and then resume production support.” The result? All parties felt more informed, empowered, and confident in the team’s direction.

Committing to community

Kari is passionate about using education and advocacy to lift all voices. Her nonprofit, Iowa Black History Research Collective, is working on an initiative to retrieve and archive copies of The Iowa State Bystander, a historically Black newspaper, from the Library of Congress.

She’s on the board of SistaSoulFest, a vendor festival celebrating women’s entrepreneurship; she volunteers with students and alumni at Grinnell College; and she does multiple book giveaways throughout the year. “Last February, I gave 25 high schoolers the ‘March’ trilogy by John Lewis during Black History Month.”
